Volunteers Help Clean Up City in Day of Caring

by J. Rossetti-Ford

Since 1992, the Day of Caring has marked the opening of the United Health Appeal Community Campaign. This year's Day of Caring, September 10, saw approximately 2,700 volunteers from local companies donate time and talent to local nonprofit organizations by way of activities such as painting, cleaning, working with children and visiting and preparing meals for senior citizens.

For volunteers from United Technologies Corporation the Day involved reading with youngsters at the Center for Youth at Betances School, an event which helped kick off the school's Reader's Club.
Meanwhile, volunteers from Northeast Utilities, Orion Capital Companies and The Hartford spent the day cleaning up trails and the volleyball court at Riverside Park with the assistance of Riverfront Recapture.

Among the numerous other participants in the Day of Caring were volunteers from the Travelers Group, who held a field day for children at the Village for Families & Children, a group of UTC Carrier Corporation employees, who spent time at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hartford helping youngsters with their homework, and volunteers from Fleet Bank, who assisted at a Harvest Fair at the Salvation Army Senior Center.
