Town InformationThe town of Canaan, population 1,060 covering 33.4 sq. miles is located in the Northwestern corner town on the east bank of the Housatonic River, created from lands of the colony of Connecticut. The town was incorporated in October of 1739. From the earliest of times, Canaan was devoted primarily to agriculture, sheep raising, and some iron mining. The divisions of interests between the northern and southern portions of the town appeared in the 18th Century, causing first a division into two ecclesiastical societies and then, in 1858, the split into two towns. The older, northern portion became North Canaan, while the southern part retained the name Canaan. The principle industry is the production of hydroelectric power at the falls, limestone mining, and some very light manufacturing.
