The town of Seymour in New Haven County, population 14,480 covering 14.7 sq. miles is located in Southwest Connecticut and was first settled when Ebenezer Johnson of Derby came upriver on the Naugatuck and purchased land from the Pequot Indians. In 1738 this settlement became known as Chusetown, after a Pequot who owned land near the Naugatuck Falls and continued to live there with fellow tribesmen despite the growing colonist population. In 1804 the name was changed to Humphreysville in honor of General David Humphreys; he began to erect mills in the town in 1802 and eventually established the first successful large woolen mill in the country here because of his innovative use of Merino sheep brought over from Spain. The town was incorporated under its present name in 1850 after a rather bitter disagreement and separation from Derby. Today Seymour is primarily a manufacturing town with a variety of industries based on copper, brass and wire products. Among its historical landmarks is the Whittenmore Tavern on South Main Street, which occupies the same building as the tavern of that name famous in the years of the Revolution.
