Town InformationThe town of Chaplin, located in northeast Connecticut, covers 19.8 sq. miles and was settled in 1740 by Deacon Benjamin Chaplin who willed his assets to the townsfolk for the establishment of a church when he died in 1795. The Chaplin society was not founded until 1822, however, when the town was incorporated on lands from Mansfield, Hampton and Windham. Now a rural town with a population of 2,060 and no large business activity, the town was once the center of more thriving industries than in 19th century population would suggest it could support. Notable among these industries was silk production: in 1838 the women of the town, who handled all aspects of the operation from the rearing of the worms to the preparation of the product for market, produced 1,200 pounds of silk. At the same time, the men of town maintained a trade in calfskin boots worth $30,000 a year in the solid currency of the time, and the Lyons family from Boston built a large paper mill in town that sent each year $65,000 worth of paper to the New York market. Today agriculture has replaced these industries, but the Chaplin Historic District preserves the elaborate houses on Main Street built on the wealth of these mills in the middle of the last century.
