The town of Derby in New Haven County, covering 5.3 sq. miles and home to 12,080 residents, is located in Southwest Connecticut at the confluence of the Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers. A trading post was established at Derby Docks in 1642 by John Wakeman of New Haven. The first year round houses were built in 1654, at which time the New Haven Colony recognized it as a town, but the residents of the Milford protested so vehemently that the order was rescinded and the settlement returned to Milford jurisdiction. After the merger of the two colonies, Derby was incorporated as a town by the General Court in Hartford in 1775. A city of Derby consolidated with the town was chartered in 1893. The town's successful commercial development was based on manufacturing. From the first water-powered gristmill in 1681 to the opening of the Housatonic Dam in 1870, efficient use of available power attracted a series of large manufactures to the town. Today the river is dredged to permit barges transportation to and from the harbor. The town's principal businesses continue to be manufactures.
